What is Alpha Gamma of New York?
Alpha Gamma of New York is the Queens College chapter of the International Sociology Honor Society (Alpha Kappa Delta). The main charter for the Alpha Gamma Chapter was established in 1981. We now have over 250 members. More than 50,000 lifetime members are affiliated with over 200 chapters of the Society. These are persons with academic records showing excellence in sociology.
Mission statement of the International Sociology Honor Society
The Society shall be a non-secret, democratic, international society of scholars dedicated to the ideal of Anthropon Katamanthanein Diakonesein or “to investigate humanity for the purpose of service.” It shall be the purpose of this Society to promote an interest in the study of Sociology, research of social problems, and such other social and intellectual activities as will lead to improvement in the human condition.
Why become a member?
Alpha Gamma of New York is important in the academic, professional, and social live of students and faculty members. The Chapter has provided opportunities for initiating and sharing activities in keeping with the purposes of the Society. Civil service employees receive a two-step boost in pay grade if they list AKD membership on the applications. Every initiate receives a handbook, a certificate, an activation form, a one-year subscription to Sociological Inquiry (the official journal of the Society), and other services. The Society also sponsors student paper contests, provides honoraria for initiation speakers, provides funds for student travel to regional sociological meetings, funds research symposia, sponsors a distinguished lecture series at the Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association, and contributes to the ASA Minority Scholarship Fund. Members may purchase pin for graduation ceremonies, Society’s jewelry, and other memorabilia from Award Concepts (P.O. Box 4305, St. Charles, IL 60174) 1-800-659-7801.
Undergraduate students must:
- Be an officially declared sociology major or demonstrate a serious interest in sociology,
- Be at least a junior (third year) in class standing,
- Have an overall GPA of 3.30, and
- Have completed 4 regular courses in sociology.
Graduate students must:
- Have an overall GPA of 3.00,
- Have a 3.00 GPA in sociology, and
- Completed one semester of graduate work in sociology.
Faculty members may be initiated.
How do I join?
Potential members should complete the form (available from the Sociology Department) and return it with the following to the Chapter’s Advisor Joyce Tang:
- An academic transcript,
- A self-addressed, stamped $5.15 (USPS “PRIORITY MAIL” Flat Rate) 9”x12″ envelope, and
- A money order of $40 made payable to “Alpha Kappa Delta.” (No cash; No personal checks)
